Kill your ISP's DNS.

It seems that the internet might remain free for a bit longer. For anyone that has any kind of Cable ISP, you'll understand. Say you've typed a URL into your browser and you magically appear at your ISP's website? (Comcast is the worst about this) Sure, you can "opt-out" of the service that you didn't fucking ask for in the first place, but why even bother when you can use Google's new DNS!

The new DNS is apparently unfiltered and written from the ground up to prevent attacks and spoofs. Lots of other features are listed in the tech specs you'll find below and I'm not going to get into that, but hell, at least you won't have to use filtered DNS servers anymore, right? To use their servers, you'll have to point your computer's resolver to the IP 8.8.8.8. and 8.8.4.4. Pretty easy to remember and handy for them they have that block of IPs.

If you don't know how to change your DNS settings and want to give them a try, the how-to article is found here. Alternatively, this link will allow you to download the userguide in pdf format. A more technical description of the service offered can be found through this link.

I've switched my desktops and servers already and I'll report back with anything interesting I might find.
